Allows pharmaceutical companies to be compliant
with BS8404: 2001
• 'Child resistant' if:
- At least 85% of the children are unable
to access more than a total of 8 units
within 5 minutes without a demonstration
- At least 80% of the children are unable
to access more than a total of 8 units
within a total of 10 minutes. (5 minutes
without
a demonstration plus 5 minutes after a
demonstration.)
- N.B. Child = 41-52 months old
• 'Senior friendly' if:
- After the initial 5 minute period of familiarisation
of the product and literature AND successfully
opening it, adults are then given another
identical product - if 90% or more of these
adults are successful in accessing at least
1 unit during the following 1 minute test period,
the test is successful.
The legislation came into force
in the UK on 1st October 2003. Existing
Paracetamol,
Aspirin and Iron (<24mg) products must
comply with the legislation by 1st October
2005
